Accomplishment Report

We are proud to report that the Mindoro Kabuhayan Foundation, Inc. (MKFI) has reached 76,863 beneficiaries in its 20 years of operation.

MKFI celebrates this historical moment by presenting its modest achievements as a socio-economic  development foundation and turning into actions the corporate social responsibility of the RGV Group of Companies.

The 20 fruitful years of MKFI has been made possible through the full support of its local and foreign benefactors, program partners, supporters and beneficiaries. It was able to continue serving the less privileged through the various development programs and livelihood projects that provide gainful employment and income-generating opportunities.

Despite the political crisis and economic setbacks which struck every single economic endeavor and almost brought big and small businesses down to their toes, MKFI has successfully managed to move on, touching thousands of lives through its livelihood programs, education and basic social services. The limited manpower and financial resources never hindered the Foundation from serving the less fortunate in pursuit of its mandate to enable its beneficiaries to become productive and responsible members of society.

Along with agricultural production, a wide array of of agri-based and off-farm enterprises are being supported by the Foundation. These small businesses are engaged in small-scale trading, native delicacies production, handicrafts, novelty items and basketry, garments manufacturing, food vending, furniture making, meat and fruit processing and soap making. One of the most profitable enterprises that MKFI supported is the production of virgin coconut oil (VCO), which benefited 300 small coconut farmers and entrepreneurs. The pilot area is the Municipality of Pola that gained strong support from the Local Government Unit (LGU). The VCO produced by MKFI, known as POLA (Pure Organic Lauric Acid) has gained recognition in the local market for being purely organic,. The Foundation is alo engaged in the commercial production of bottled drinking water in partnership with San Ignacio Barangay Waterworks Association and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Baco, a project funded by the Department of Agriculture, InfRES-JFPR and Asian Development Bank. To support sustainable agriculture, MKFI is also engaged in the commercial production of organic fertilizer.

MKFI understands the limitations of small businesses; the reason why it provides assistance ranging from loans at concessional interest rates, to training, to marketing. In fact. one significant role that MKFI continues to play is that of leading peoples’ organizations and cooperatives in securing financial support for their projects.  Assistance is also given to complement the inherent skills and talents of its beneficiaries under the Micro-enterprise Development Programs (EDP).  In fact, the Foundation values human resource development, recognizing that manpower is the most valued resource.  It provides staff development and institutional support to its beneficiaries to equip them with adequate knowledge, skills, attitudes and values necessary for them to become efficient project managers and partners.

MKFI is actively involved in providing shelter for the homeless and calamity victims. It has constructed core housing projects in Barangays Suqui and Wawa in Calapan City, Barangays Tabon-tabon, Putican Cabulo and Pambisan in the Municipality of Baco and Brgy. Bancuro in Naujan; provided housing to 420 families who were affected by typhoons and earthquake that hit Oriental Mindoro. Similarly, through a property donated by the RGV Development  Corporation, MKFI was able to provide housing lots to 81 qualified urban poor families in Sitio Bagong Silang, Lumangbayan in Calapan City.

Along with providing shelter, the Foundation constructs potable water systems for Mangyans and depressed barangays with no access to safe drinking water. Another important community outreach project involves medical and financial assistance to indigent patients and families. MKFI sponsors scholarship programs for deserving high school and college students. It also undertakes supplemental feeding for malnourished children, early childhood day care classes and functional literacy.
Environmental protection and conservation also forms a key component of MKFI's programs.  Thus it is actively involved in coastal resource management, coastal clean-ups, environmental sanitation, waste management and clean and green programs.

In the course of implementing its projects, basic challenges are much the same as they were in the past. The Foundation strongly believes that stimulation of local economies is crucial to the economic survival of depressed communities. Thus, replicability and sustainability are mainstays of MKFI programming principles which are empowerment, economy, employment and environment. Its programs and projects are based on its Community Development Framework. Systems and policies are in place.

Livelihood programs do not mean providing financial assistance alone. They are always complemented with capacity building using participatory approaches geared toward enhancing management skills, development of right attitude, positive values and character building among the beneficiaries - the reason why programs and projects are anchored on the popular maxim which goes: “Give man fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish; he will eat for the rest of his life.”

With its 20 years of humble achievements, MKFI takes pride in playing its role as one of the catalysts to Mindoro’s socio-economic development.

We wish to express our deepest appreciation and gratitude to our benefactors who have supported MKFI with financial assistance, technical expertise and other resources that enabled us to implement our projects. Our thanks to the Founding Chairman, Hon. Rodolfo G.Valencia, for his unwavering support and inspiration, to our Board of Trustees for helping us finetune our programs and to all the officers and staff for their commitment and dedication.

From its humble beginnings, the Foundation looks forward to bigger milestones in the years to come through fruitful and meaningful partnerships with government, civil societies and the private sector. In the meantime, we leave behind a mark of pride and fulfillment that we made a difference in the lives of the people we touched.
